Theotokos - Woman, Mother, Disciple: A Catechesis on Mary, Mother of God
Published in Paperback by St. Paul Books & Media (September, 1999)
Authors: Pope John Paul II and John P. Beal
Average review score:

The Real Deal
This is the fifth volume in a printed series of catechises on the Catholic faith by Pope John Paul II. If you are looking to learn about The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, then look no further. This book is a compilation of addresses given by The Holy Father on Our Lady. Easy to read because it's a transcript of his addresses, so it reads like the spoken word. Each address is short (most are 3 pages) so it allows for a natural break, allowing the reader to stop and reflect in prayer. Different style than Scott Hahn's "Hail Holy Queen". Deeper and more reflective. A must read for fan's of the Blessed Mother.

Daily Inspiration
"Through The Year With Pope John Paul II" consists of a collection of inspirational thoughts for each day of the year. Each entry consists of a short scripture passage followed by a few paragraphs from a public statement made by His Holiness, either in the first three years of his Papacy or during his priestly service in Poland.

This book is an excellent source of daily spiritual inspiration. Buy it and keep it handy.

The Two Wings of Catholic Thought: Essays on Fides Et Ratio
Published in Paperback by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (January, 2003)
Authors: David Ruel Foster and Joseph W. Koterski
Average review score:

Orthodoxy on parade
This is an excellent study of John Paul II's difficult encyclical on faith and reason. Most of the contributions deal with the vexed issue of "Christian philosophy," a much disputed topic in the 1930s which has been given new life by our reigning philosopher-pope. Highlights are the fine essays by Avery Cardinal Dulles, placing the current issues in historical context, and the remrkable essay by David Meconi on the Marian dimension of philosophy.

The Unknown Pope: Benedict XV (1912-1922) and the Pursuit of Peace
Published in Paperback by Geoffrey Chapman (January, 2001)
Author: John F. Pollard
Average review score:

The Greatness of Benedict XV
There has of late been something of a cottage industry for Twentieth Century Vatican history, partially due to increased openness of Catholic archives. Pope Benedict XV is not only the unknown Pope of John Pollard's title, but surely the last great figure of World War I to be the subject of a modern biographer.

Lacking the sensationalism that has been a recent hallmark of some Catholic history, this work combines substantial original research in Catholic and State archives in the Vatican City, Italy, Britain and the United States with an exhaustive analysis of printed primary and secondary sources in an array of languages.

Having also pursued researches in the Vatican's Secret Archive I can testify that this must have been no easy task.

What emerges is a portrait of Pope Benedict XV balancing delicate issues between the Allied and Central Powers in the face of continued difficulties with the Italian state, but also a compassionate man who cared greatly for those around him, and for the sufferings of war.

Adopting a broadly chronological approach, Pope Benedict XV's origins, ascent to the papacy, role in the war and relations with Italy, humanitarian relief, peace diplomacy and post-war relations with Italy and the rest of the world are all covered seemlessly.

A seminal work which points the way ahead for church history and will surely prove the inspiration for further work on Pope Benedict XV and the role of the Papacy in the Twentieth Century, this book also deserves to be read by anyone with an interest in World War I, humanitarian aid, diplomatic and Italian history.

More uncommonly, this work is written in a clear style. John Pollard continues to hold the reader's attention and employs a light touch to explain the many curiosities of a pre-Vatican II pontificate.

Informative and enlightening views by American theologians
This book offers some really insightful pieces on the Pope John Paul II's "Veritatas Splendor." Especially thought-provoking was O'Keefe's piece on Augustine and perfectionism. A great resource for those who really want to think through this Vatican document.

Vicars of Christ: Popes, Power, and Politics in the Modern World
Published in Hardcover by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (February, 1998)
Authors: Michael P. Riccards and Michael P. Richards
Average review score:

A concise and readable history of the modern papacy
Dr. Riccards' book is an excellent review of the modern papacy, from the fall of the papal states to John Paul II. As the millenium nears, and John Paul's papacy nears its end, this book helps readers understand the social and political forces that define the leader of the church.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about how the papacy came to be in 1999.

Warbonnets: From Super Chief to Super Fleet
Published in Hardcover by Pentrex Media Group (December, 1994)
Authors: Dan Pope, Jeffrey Moreau, and Daniel W. Pope
Average review score:

The ultimate publication on Santa Fe's Warbonnet Scheme
This premier publication is perfect in every way. It contains the most beautiful collection of photographs of Santa Fe's distinguished Warbonnet paint scheme. From its inception in the 1930's to the present day, this book characterizes an American railroad's graphic identity with dramatic detail. But, it does more than that. It is written with dramatic feeling and is distinguished by a prologue from the Hollywood TV and film star Michael Gross. This isn't just a train enthusiast book. It's a small portrait of Americana. The astounding design by Leland A. Knickerbocker still lives today even after the Santa Fe has since merged with the Burlington Northern. Thanks to Dan Pope and Mark Lynn for capturing this timeless part of our history.
